PETALING JAYA: Former Banting assemblyman Lau Weng San was elected as the new speaker of the Selangor state assembly today.
Lau’s appointment was proposed by Sekinchan assemblyman Ng Suee Lim, who was the former speaker, and supported by Banting assemblyman V Papparaidu.
According to Harian Metro, Sijangkang assemblyman Dr Yunus Hairi had proposed Selangor PAS deputy commissioner Fuad Salleh as the speaker, supported by Selat Klang assemblyman Abdul Rashid Asari.

Lau received 34 votes, and Fuad 22.
In July, DAP said it would nominate a non-assemblyman from the party as the Selangor state assembly speaker should Pakatan Harapan-Barisan Nasional win the Aug 12 state election.
This was a condition for PH to give up one seat to BN in the polls.
For the position of deputy speaker, Port Klang assemblyman Azmizam Zaman Huri proposed Bukit Antarabangsa assemblyman Kamri Kamaruddin, and was supported by Teratai assemblyman Yew Jia Haur.
Perikatan Nasional proposed Sungai Ramal assemblyman Shafie Ngah through Sabak assemblyman Sallehen Mukhyi, supported by Gombak Setia assemblyman Hilman Idham.
After a vote, Kamri was elected deputy speaker with 34 votes over Shafie’s 22.
A total of 56 assemblymen were sworn in today.
On Aug 12, PH-BN formed the Selangor state government after winning 34 out of the 56 state assembly seats, while PN obtained 22 seats.
